GULU - Popular northern Uganda musician Justin Obol, widely known by his stage name Simple Man, has officially been sworn in as the new LCV chairperson of Gulu District, marking a dramatic transition from the music stage to political leadership.

Obol, a member of the Democratic Party, succeeded former district chairperson Christopher Opiyo Ateker of the National Resistance Movement following Ateker’s defeat in the previous election.

After the swearing-in ceremony at the Gulu City Council Hall on Friday, 22 May, Obol assured his supporters that his political office would not end his music career.

He said he would continue producing songs focused on education, community sensitisation, and social development, although he would limit public performances to special occasions.

“I became known to many people through music,” Obol said, acknowledging the role his musical career played in building his public image and political support.

The colourful ceremony was filled with celebration as district technical staff and former councillors entertained guests with Catholic hymns during breaks in the council proceedings.

Among the songs performed were “In Aye Lakwata”, meaning “The Lord is My Shepherd”, and “Ber pa Rubanga Ikomwa”, translated as “The Goodness of the Lord Unto Us.”

The event was attended by Rev. Fr. Erick Uma, parish priest of Holy Rosary Catholic Parish, whom Obol described as his spiritual father.

The newly sworn-in district boss also paid tribute to Norbert Mao, Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs and president general of the Democratic Party, as well as Hilary Onek, Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, for mentoring and supporting him throughout his political journey.

According to Obol, both leaders offered him guidance, wisdom and encouragement during the campaign period.

Reflecting on his humble upbringing, Obol recalled selling roasted groundnuts on the streets of Gulu in his younger days, saying his background should inspire young people to believe in their dreams.

“My humble beginning did not stop me from becoming the LCV chairperson of Gulu,” he said while encouraging the youth to remain hopeful and hardworking.

As part of his administration’s agenda, Obol pledged to prioritise resolving land conflicts, fighting corruption, improving roads and infrastructure, strengthening education and healthcare services, increasing agricultural production, expanding access to clean water and protecting the environment.

He also promised to promote tourism, improve local revenue collection and encourage proper land use across communities in the district.

During the council session, Obol appointed Peter Okot, councillor for Paicho Sub-county, as vice chairperson.

Other appointments included Balington Olweny Pa Ongwech, councillor for Bungatira, as Secretary for Works, Production and Technical Services; Irene Lamwaka Atim from Palaro as Secretary for Finance, Planning and Administration; and Bosco Oryema of Pibona as Secretary for Social and Community-Based Services.

In the election for district speaker, Kenneth Okello Doggy, the male councillor representing workers, defeated Samuel Baker Mwaka, councillor for Patiko Sub-county. Jenneth Acan from Omel was elected deputy speaker unopposed.

All newly appointed secretaries and standing committee chairpersons were later sworn in by Gulu Chief Magistrate Agustine Alule Koma after receiving endorsement from the district council.
