President Yoweri Museveni has promised to follow up on the compensation of the affected persons as a result of animal-human conflicts in the areas around Murchison Falls National Game Park.
While campaigning in his second venue in Acholi sub-region at Anaka Primary School in Anaka Town council, Nwoya district, on Tuesday, Museveni, the candidate for the ruling National Resistance Movement, said he will ask Robinah Nabbanja, the Prime Minister, to follow up on the issues of compensation.
Mary Adokorach, the Nwoya district NRM chairperson, told Museveni that whereas sh 11million had been paid out, another sh48million has not been delivered to the registered claimants.
He also pledged that he will ensure that an electric fence is put around MFNP so that no wild animals can cross into neighbouring villages and destroy food crops.
The President's pledge followed a request from Mary Adokorach, Nwoya district NRM chairperson, that the president should intervene on the continuous invasion of stray elephants from the park to the community, which are killing people, destroying crops and other property.
She said that, whereas the Government has started erecting the electric fence along the park boundary, the project was stopped without explanation.
Adokorach said many people had died and property had been destroyed due to elephant invasions.
Richard Todwong, the Secretary General of NRM, also requested the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities to prioritise the issues of human-wildlife conflicts in Nwoya, saying that three sub-counties are affected.
The electric fence along the park boundary, if completed, will address the human-wildlife conflicts, he added,
Later in the afternoon, Museveni held another rally in Omoro.
