Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) party president Gen. (rtd) Gregory Mugisha Muntu has urged the public to vote for leaders with character; people who stand with their community in good and bad times.
He says the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party government dangles money to vocal and good Opposition politicians to compromise them so that no leader can speak about the problems people are facing.
“What President [Yoweri] Museveni and the NRM government have perfected is to target leaders, compromise them and once they are compromised, they no longer care about the people who voted for them. This needs leaders with character who will not be compromised with money to shut their mouths,” he says.
Muntu remarked at Alokolum cell, while launching the campaign for his party flag-bearer Robert Mugabe, on June 29, 2025. Mugabe is aspiring for the Bardege-Layibi division Member of Parliament position.
Muntu cited Members of Parliament allegedly amending laws based on the decision of President Museveni at the NRM caucus, but not what the citizens of Uganda want.
He claimed that the NRM government has caused fears amongst politicians, who now fear that they might not win if they contest under Opposition political parties, and now choose to contest under the NRM ticket to survive.
Muntu said, 'most of these leaders are not in the NRM party fully, but to win elections or get ways of survival'.
Mugabe said he came to contest to bring back the trust people have lost in leaders. He said if he is elected, he will unite the Acholi parliamentary caucus and see that they speak with one voice for the people of Achol.
Alice Anena Oroma, one of the aspirants for the Laroo-Pece division constituency in Gulu city, also urged the voters not to vote for leaders who only come to them during campaigns.
“I urged you not to vote for leaders who are always not with you, they only come during campaigns with their money to buy votes from you. These leaders will never represent your voices”, she said.
The Rev. Naptali Otto said people should be keen to elect leaders in the coming general election. He said most of the leaders who defected from the Opposition to NRM are people who are looking for survival; not those contesting to represent voters.
“It will be difficult for defectors to say anything bad against the NRM government, they only do things on behalf of the party and will sell us for their survival. I request that we don’t vote them”, he said.
