The nomination of candidates for parliamentary elections entered a second and final day on Thursday (October 23) across Uganda.

As was the case on the opening day, the nomination exercise for directly-elected Members of Parliament and District Woman Representatives is taking place at district or city headquarters countrywide.

The exercise officially started at 9am and will close at 5pm.

Meanwhile, the nominations for Special Interest Groups (youths, persons with disabilities, workers and older persons) are taking place at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Industrial Area, Kampala, within the same hours.

In Wakiso, it was a full house on Thursday as aspirants waited patiently inside the hall for their turn to be nominated.

Hajji Abdul Kiyimba of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) was among those nominated on the second day. He was cleared to contest for the Busiro East parliamentary seat. After getting the nod from the Electoral Commission, Kiyimba's supporters celebrated with joyous chants and dances.

Meanwhile, independent Moses Kayanja arrived for his nomination in dramatic style: carrying a bunch of matooke (bananas) on his head. He is eyeing the Kyadondo East parliamentary seat.

The independent candidates have 20 symbols approved by the Electoral Commission to choose from.

They are: ball, banana, boat, book, borehole, candle, car, chair, clock, coffee, cup, house, jerrycan, kettle, megaphone, pot, radio, saucepan, table and television.

Tom Muwonge, also an independent, was nominated to contest in the Kyadondo East race.

Timothy Lule Luberenga of the Common Man's Party (CMP) was also duly nominated on the day. He wants to represent Kyadondo East in the next Parliament.
