Chemonges beats former magistrate to Kapchorwa Municipality NRM MP flag

KAPCHORWA - Martin Chemonges has secured the Kapchorwa Municipality National Resistance Movement (NRM) MP flag after a tight race in a re-run of the primaries following the nullification of last week's exercise due to irregularities.

He was declared winner with 11,341 votes (48.01%) ahead of his closest challenger and former magistrate Patrick Kitiyo, who got 9,388 votes.

Alex Chelimo was third with 2,632 votes while Alfred Satya trailed with 258 votes.
Chemonges thanked his supporters and asked them to do even better in the 2026 general election.

"The second battle [re-run] is over and I thank you [voters] a lot. I ask my supporters to remain united because the real war is not won yet," he said.

'DR forms doctored'

However, Chemonges' challenger Kitiyo disputed the results, saying the exercise was marred with "a lot irregularities".

"The declaration of results forms bear multiple varying signatures purported to be those of the [NRM] electoral commission chairperson, Dr Tanga Odoi," he said.

Defeated Patrick Kitiyo disputed the outcome of the primary election.

"Some of these declaration of results forms are doctored and I have presented them before the registrar and officials from headquarters but they didn't take appropriate action."

Kitiyo worked in the Judiciary for 17 years, with his most recent role being a Grade One Magistrate posted to Nakaloke court, Northern Division in Mbale city.

Incumbent MP Sam Cheptoris, who is also the Minister of Water and Environment, announced his resignation from active politics months heading to the NRM primaries.
