2026 polls: UPC sets rates for party primaries

The party’s president, Jimmy Akena, urged aspirants to take the exercise seriously and ensure they meet all the necessary requirements to avoid disqualification.

The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has announced that aspiring candidates for parliamentary positions under the party’s flag will be required to pay an application fee of shillings one million.

Party spokesperson Faizo Muzeyi on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, said the application fees for the different positions were:

▪️ LC chairperson—500,000

▪️ LC5 councillors—100,000

▪️ City mayor—500,000

▪️ Municipality mayor/city division mayor—300,000

▪️ Division mayors—200,000

▪️ LC3 chairperson—100,000

▪️ Municipal councillors—20,000

▪️ LC3 councillors—10,000 

The party said all the aspiring candidates participating in the UPC internal processes should present the party membership card, proof of annual subscription fee, proof of the application fee for the respective elective position, three recent passport size photographs, and the required academic documents as per the elective position as well as a nominator and a seconder.

UPC has also reminded aspirants to verify and establish their academic papers with the Electoral Commission (EC) by the set deadlines for the local government positions, July 3, 2025, while for parliamentary positions is July 16, 2025.

According to Akena, UPC has also reiterated its support for arts and humanities teachers who have been fighting for salary enhancements and improved working conditions.

The party has praised the government for finally agreeing to address the anomaly and has called for the restoration of the dignity of arts and humanities teachers.

Akena concluded by urging all members to participate in the ongoing exercise and to support the party’s candidates in the upcoming elections.
