KAMPALA - The Nakawa Chief Magistrates’ court has dismissed a bail application of jailed National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy spokesperson and Nakawa East Member of Parliament aspirant Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro on grounds that he will interfere with investigations.
On November 13, 2025, Grade One Magistrate Frank Namanya noted that indeed the investigations are still ongoing, and given the status of the applicant in the society, being a deputy spokesperson of the opposition party in Uganda with command and respect and means, in his view, Mufumbiro would interfere with investigations and witnesses.
In his ruling, magistrate Namanya said in order to preserve the integrity of the investigations and public confidence and justice, it would only be fair that the accused temporarily remain in custody to pave the way for speedy investigations and for justice to be seen to be done.
“Having considered the law, the nature of the offense with which the accused is charged of, its gravity, the status of the investigations, the effect of the offense on the society and having considered the balance of interest between the applicant’s right and the public I decline to grant the accused person bail but rather advise him to reapply when investigations are complete and consequently direct that the state expedites investigations,” he ordered.
Court also noted that although Mufumbiro presented three substantial sureties: His father, Moses Baligeya; his wife, Edith Katende; and Nakawa West Member of Parliament, Ronald Balimwezo, the gravity of the offence and likelihood of interference with witnesses warranted his continued detention.
On October 22, 2025, Mufumbiro, who was ordinarily supposed to appear for his nomination, was instead taken to Nakawa Chief magistrates’ court to plead to the new charges.
It is alleged that on September 4, 2025, within Kampala city, incited NUP supporters to commit an offence against Ugandan security personnel, to wit murder.
Mufumbiro was duly nominated to contest for the Nakawa East MP seat while in prison.
The case has been adjourned till early December for mention.
