'Vote for eligible leaders who will champion development'

Bishop Kagodo said that in previous elections, some voters elected candidates who were not substantially fit for office, largely out of revenge and bandwagon voting, a trend he said has cost communities in terms of development.

The Bishop of Mukono Diocese, Enos Kitto Kagodo, has urged Christians to vote for eligible leaders who will champion good governance and development in their communities.

Bishop Kagodo said that in previous elections, some voters elected candidates who were not substantially fit for office, largely out of revenge and bandwagon voting, a trend he said has cost communities in terms of development.

“Take your time to think before making decisions on those candidates who approach you asking for votes. Don’t vote for people just because you have been told, but look for potential in them,” he said.

The bishop made the remarks while leading the Christmas service at St Philip and Andrew’s Cathedral in Mukono Municipality. Uganda will head to the polls on January 15, 2026, for the presidential and parliamentary elections.

He also called for a violence-free election and post-election period, stressing that the country must remain peaceful before, during and after the polls.

“Elections mostly benefit the electorate, more so if they vote for the leaders who are worthwhile. Don’t vote for leaders who are just looking for a change of status, those looking for jobs and those who also failed to cater for themselves,” the bishop stressed.

Kagodo further raised concern over the increasing cases of domestic violence affecting many families across the country and advised couples facing challenges to seek God’s guidance.

He noted that many people have regretted sharing family challenges with individuals they believed had solutions, only to be turned into subjects of discussion instead of receiving meaningful help. He urged believers to place their trust in Jesus.

Mukono district chairperson Rev. Dr Peter Bakaluba Mukasa, who attended the service, called on Christians to maintain peace throughout the festive season.

Bakaluba thanked Kagodo for his efforts towards the construction of the new Mukono Cathedral and for being a consistent advocate for peace wherever he goes.
