The stage is set for one of the most anticipated intellectual contests in Uganda, as universities gear up for the challenge. Students, coaches, and faculty members are making their final preparations for the ultimate test of knowledge, skill, and teamwork.

As the big day approaches, universities are fuelling the rivalry with intense training.

At Kyambogo University, deputy dean of students, Dr Agnes Nakimuli Mugalu, expressed confidence in her team’s ability to dominate the quiz.

“We are a centre of academic excellence, and I am sure our students will perform admirably,” she said, stressing the importance of the competition as a platform to push intellectual boundaries and connect students with potential career opportunities.

The Ultimate University Quiz encourages students to broaden their knowledge, provides opportunities for talent identification, and creates pathways for career advancement.

The competition attracts over 20 chartered universities across the country and is sponsored by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), and the Bank of Uganda (BOU). It has become a stepping stone for professional success in an increasingly competitive job market.

At UCU, the buzz is equally high. Pamela Tumwebaze, UCU’s director of student affairs, assured that her university’s students are well-prepared.

“Our students are naturally curious and constantly researching. I have no doubt we’ll come back with big wins,” she remarked.

With both teams pushing themselves to their limits, this year’s competition promises to showcase the depth of knowledge from Uganda’s brightest young minds.

UCU’s coach, Francis Byaruhanga, highlighted their focus on subjects such as banking, technology, politics, and current affairs.

“We’re leaving no stone unturned in preparation,” he said, as the team engages in mini-quiz competitions to refine their knowledge.

The competition not only challenges students’ academic capabilities but also offers exposure to potential internships and professional networks.

Victoria Poni Tombek from UCU shared her excitement about taking part for the first time.

"I'm an ambitious person, and I believe stepping out of my comfort zone will help me learn more and grow."

Testimonies

Saviour Arinda, a KYU alumnus and past participant, recalled how the quiz was a thrilling experience that motivated him to interact with organisations such as the Bank of Uganda and UCC.

“This played a significant role in my professional growth,” he said. “It helped me launch the UCC Debate Series, a programme focused on digital safety for secondary school students.”

Arinda encouraged current students to embrace such opportunities for personal and professional growth, noting that they are essential for shaping their futures.

Nataline Kurora Afoyorwoth, an alumna from UCU and a past participant, described her experience in the competition as both humbling and eye-opening.

"The quiz teaches you how much you don’t know," she reflected.

"It keeps you discovering new things every day. I was surprised by how a twist in the questions can completely change the perspective on what you think you know."

Returning participant Richard Chubaka noted the camaraderie and fellowship that come with competing.

"It's an unforgettable experience to be in a room full of brilliant minds," he said.

"If we win, it would not only be a personal achievement but also an inspiration for other students to embrace a broader range of knowledge."
