Vision Group has praised the Women in News (WIN) initiative of the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) for its longstanding partnership, which has seen dozens of staff benefit from specialised training and mentorship programs since 2019.
During a courtesy visit to Vision Group headquarters in Kampala on August 18, 2025, a delegation from WIN reaffirmed its commitment to advancing gender equality, leadership, and digital transformation in Uganda’s media industry.
The delegation, which included, Jane Godia, the Deputy Executive Director of Operations at WAN-IFRA and global lead for the WIN Leadership Accelerator, Nancy Agutu, the WIN Coordinator Partnerships and transformation, and Salama Mutasa, the project coordinator, are in the country for their week-long Uganda Country Mission.
While hosting the team, Vision Group CEO Don Wanyama reaffirmed Vision Group’s commitment to continued collaboration with WIN. “Our staff have benefited a lot from the continuous training, specifically from the Best Share sessions and the Digital ABC courses facilitated by WIN trainers,” he said. He called for the exploration of new tools and opportunities to address local media challenges and urged staff to take full advantage of world-class training offered by WIN.

Godia, who led the visiting team, explained that the country mission was aimed at strengthening partnerships and assessing the impact of past interventions.
“It was really time for us to catch up and discuss how beneficial our partnership has been, and also to listen to what Vision may need that is different from what we are offering,” she said.

She noted that Vision Group has consistently embraced WIN’s capacity-building opportunities, with staff benefiting from training in areas such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, change management, and revenue innovation.
According to Godia, this proactive approach has helped Vision Group align its newsroom with modern media practices.
“Many of the participants say they are now able to do their work differently, and one of the best impacts is that Vision has now gone digital-first as a result of these trainings,” she added.
Vision Group’s Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Felix Osike, highlighted how the training offered by WIN has raised digital awareness within the newsroom. He said over 50 Vision Group employees had benefited from the trainings since 2021.
He also acknowledged the support extended through social Impact reporting story grants, which he said not only improved Gender Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (GEDI) in our reporting but also facilitated Vision Group to cover stories that are impactful and important to citizens.
Senior Human Resource Business Partner for editorial, Catherine Mwesigwa, said continuous training was a key ingredient for a thriving media house and hailed the opportunities availed by the WIN partnership. “We can’t underestimate the training and the capacity building the WIN programs have enabled Vision Group staff; Thank you,” she said.
Background
Since its launch in 2010, the Women in News programme has grown into a global initiative active in more than 30 countries, aiming to advance gender equality and inclusion in the media. In Uganda, Vision Group has emerged as one of its strongest partners, consistently nominating participants and integrating the lessons learned into its operations.
As the partnership enters its sixth year, both organisations expressed optimism about scaling up training, mentorship, and newsroom innovation to ensure Ugandan media professionals remain competitive on the global stage.
