Uganda to pay Iraqi govt sh30b

In 2000, Iraq sued Uganda in the Commercial Court, seeking repayment of the loan, and Justice Patrick Okumu Wengi ruled in its favour. Iraq subsequently obtained a certificate of order compelling Uganda to pay the loan. However, Uganda failed to satisfy the decree.

After hearing the matter, the court on July 19, 2002, ordered Uganda to pay $6,432,809 (about sh22.5b), with interest at 2.5% per annum from the date of judgment until full payment, in addition to general damages and costs.

KAMPALA - The Court of Appeal has ordered Uganda to pay the Iraqi government $8.7m (about sh30.4b) in an outstanding loan.

The loan was extended to Uganda between 1975
