Police have foiled a suspected armed robbery attempt in Kampala city's Kawempe division, arresting three suspects and recovering a vehicle along with breaking implements during a late-night operation.
The incident occurred on July 25, 2025, night when intelligence indicated that a gang of about eight suspected robbers planned to raid a factory in the Kawempe–Kutano area.
Addressing journalists on July 28 at Police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the group was reportedly moving in a white Toyota Noah (UBR 490Y) with no front number plate, and a red CT Boxer motorcycle with an unregistered plate.
“They had already broken into AYA Group of Companies in Corner Zone, Kazo Angola Parish, and made away with valuables and cash,” Owoyesigyire said during the joint security briefing.
“A section of the gang was deployed along Kawempe–Lugoba Road to monitor the area, with one suspect armed with an AK-47 rifle.”
At about 3:40 a.m., police laid an ambush and intercepted the vehicle as it picked up suspects carrying a sack.
“In the ensuing operation, three suspects were arrested after attempting to flee. Warning shots were fired and the vehicle’s tyres deflated to neutralise resistance,” Owoyesigyire said.
Arrested suspects:
Robert Lubega
William Kasozi
Charles Mubinge
Recovered exhibits:
Toyota Noah (UBR 490Y)
Four heavy metallic breaking tools
“Preliminary statements from one suspect indicate the gang had nine members and specifically targeted the company after spotting a suspected safe,” Owoyesigyire added.
Police are now hunting for the remaining accomplices.
