The Police in Busia have confirmed that 19-year-old Polly Bwire, who died on Friday, July 4, was killed in unclear circumstances while attending a night dance disco at Namungodi Primary School.

The district police commander, Alice Kuka, confirmed Bwire's death, saying he was killed in the wee hours of Friday.

According to Kuka, Bwire was attacked by unknown assailants who cut his neck using a sharp object.

"He died en route to Masafu Hospital," Kuka said, adding that the body had been taken to Busia Health Centre IV mortuary.

She said a woman who was seen dancing with Bwire before his death was arrested to help the police with the investigation.

The disco dance was organised by Balaam Barugahara, the children and youth state minister and his colleague John Mulimba, the regional cooperation minister at Namungodi Primary School.

Barugahara was in Busia on Thursday for a youth fund accountability event, which was combined with the launch of Mulimba’s NRM primaries campaign.

Police say that in a related incident, 16-year-old Collins Ojambo was admitted to Busia Health IV with severe wounds sustained at the same disco. The teenager was reportedly hacked by a gang wielding axes.

Bwire's death has been widely condemned by different politicians after reports that the deceased was wearing a t-shirt bearing a photo of a prominent politician in Busia.

Josephat Ojambo, the bereaved father, said he was shocked that children who are supposed to be protected are now soft targets of what he termed as political events.
