Tayebwa commends Uganda-Korean friendship

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Uganda has celebrated its annual National Armed Forces Day in style, showcasing traditional Korean culture, attire, cuisine and beer. The event was held at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, with a cocktail dinner.

The colourful event attracted several dignitaries, including members of the diplomatic corps and government officials.

Uganda's Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, who represented the Government of Uganda as the chief guest, commended the long-standing friendship between Uganda and the Republic of Korea, one that has flourished for over 60 years.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of Uganda, I wish to convey the warm greetings and best wishes of His Excellency, General Yoweri Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda,” Tayebwa said.

“I also take this opportunity to commend the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Uganda for its unwavering dedication to strengthening the deep and friendly ties between our two countries,” he added.

The event was also attended by housing state minister Persis Namuganza, Karamoja minister Peter Lokeris and foreign affairs state minister Okello Oryem, among other high-ranking officials and military officers from various countries.

Tayebwa hailed the occasion as a celebration not only of Korea’s national sovereignty but also of the professionalism and resilience of its armed forces.

“The Republic of Korea stands as a symbol of resilience, having transformed from the devastation of war into one of the world’s leading economies and a beacon of technological innovation,” he said.

“Your story is an inspiration to many nations like ours that have endured similar challenges. The discipline and patriotism of the Korean military remain a cornerstone of this remarkable journey.”

He further lauded Korea’s recent engagement in Uganda, highlighting a KOICA-led initiative at the Nakivale Refugee Settlement, where solar-powered water systems and improved sanitation facilities were commissioned—benefiting both refugees and host communities.

Ambassador Park Sung-soo expressed appreciation to all guests and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.

“I congratulate the Armed Forces of Korea, who have for over 2,300 years protected our freedom and democracy,” Sung-soo said.

“Through continued democracy and economic development, the friendship between the Republic of Korea and Uganda will continue to thrive.”

The evening blended cultural elegance with diplomatic camaraderie, reflecting the enduring bond between the two nations.

The Armed Forces Day Ceremony, which is usually celebrated every October 1, is an extensive showcase of military prowess and combat capabilities of the Republic of Korea both at home and abroad, thereby boosting the morale of the entire Armed Forces.
