KAMPALA - As Uganda gears up to host Group C fixtures of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), the public is being urged to stay alert, act responsibly and showcase national pride during this high-profile continental event.

Speaking to journalists at the Uganda Media Centre on July 31, 2025, Uganda Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, outlined key behavioural and security expectations for fans attending matches at the newly refurbished Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, Wakiso district.

“This is not Valentine’s Day, a candlelit dinner, or a honeymoon getaway,” Rusoke said. “Come to support your teams, but dress appropriately. Transparent dresses and body-revealing outfits are not welcome. Anyone causing commotion will be handled accordingly.”

National pride under the spotlight

Rusoke emphasised that Uganda’s status as an emerging meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) destination is on the line, urging the public to treat CHAN 2024 as a moment of national pride.

“Let’s show Africa that Uganda is not only a football-loving country but also one of the most welcoming and disciplined,” he added.

Tight security measures in place

The tournament officially begins tomorrow, August 2, with the first Group C match scheduled for August 4. Rusoke announced that a multi-agency security operation is already in place - featuring collaboration between the Uganda Police Force, the military, and intelligence services.

“Our teams are securing all key areas - stadiums, hotels, team bases, fan zones, and transport routes,” Rusoke said. “Unless you have a VIP sticker, do not expect to park near the stadium.”

He emphasized that tickets will be sold exclusively online, warning fans to avoid fraudulent sellers.

“There are no match-day gold deals or diamonds being offered,” he cautioned. “Stick to official platforms. And once assigned a seat, don’t expect to switch - it’s final.”

Crime prevention a top priority

With large crowds expected, authorities are on high alert for common crimes such as ticket fraud, impersonation, pickpocketing, and unauthorised entry. Surveillance systems, undercover officers, and patrol teams will be actively deployed in and around event venues.

“Petty thieves and con artists hoping to cash in on the tournament will be disappointed,” Rusoke warned. “CHAN 2024 is a celebration of sport—not a breeding ground for crime.”

CHAN investment goes beyond football

Dr Dennis Mugimba, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Education and Sports, lauded the broader impact of hosting CHAN 2024.

“Significant investment has gone into refurbishing stadium infrastructure, boosting media coverage, and improving security,” Mugimba said.

“There is far more to football than just entertainment - it’s an economic and national development driver.”

Kireka and Bweyogerere soak up the buzz

The surrounding suburbs of Kireka and Bweyogerere are already buzzing with anticipation. A tour through these neighbourhoods reveals bars, eateries, and street vendors stocking up in preparation for the expected football crowd.

Lodges and guesthouses are fully booked, with fans arriving from Rwanda, Burundi, and Kenya. Kiswahili is the dominant language in the streets, with English becoming the fallback option - reflecting regional unity through sport.

“We’re expecting a huge turnout,” said Jane Nalu, an attendant at Victoria Bar in Kireka. “Stock is in. The meat and kachumbari are ready. And yes, we’ll be showing all the games live - plus hosting our usual Beach Bash!”

Joseph Karuiki from Kenya confides that besides football, he is here to sample the famed nightlife along Acacia Avenue and the Spirit of Uganda (the Uganda Waragi gin).

More than just football

As Uganda hosts CHAN 2024, organisers and authorities are calling on fans to do more than just show up - they want the world to see the heart, discipline, and hospitality of the Ugandan people.

“Let this be more than just football,” concluded Rusoke. “Let it be a celebration of who we are: peaceful, proud, and truly Ugandan.”
