Over 20,000 Kasokoso residents in Kira municipality, Wakiso district, have been reinstated on their land days after President Yoweri Museveni halted their eviction.

According to Property Owners’ Association chairperson for greater Kasokoso Joseph Magira, the about 456 acres were earlier being claimed by the National Housing and Construction Company (NHCCL), the locals and the Buganda Kingdom.

Magira told New Vision Online that the disputed land is currently occupied by residents from five villages, including Kinnawattaka, Mbuya II Zone I, Banda Zone I/Acholi quarters, Kireka D/Kiganda and Kasokoso.

On January 4, 2026, through Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, Museveni officially handed over the said land to the locals, sparking jubilation all over the area.

He (Museveni) ordered that the Kasokoso-Kiganda area, which has been the centre of conflict, should be planned and developed with appropriate infrastructure, including roads and social amenities such as hospitals, electricity and water, to serve the big population currently living there.

“Our people, in the area, should be left to stay; and develop their respective pieces of land, no evictions of the occupants should take place, and lastly, the locals should be granted security of tenure, in the form of individual land titles,” Museveni ordered.

He added that his leadership carefully studied the Kasokoso land issue, which was brought to his attention during the Parish Development Model (PDM) tours in November 2025 through the National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders, particularly, Umar Muyanja.

The president, however, attributed the suffering of Kasokoso residents to the wrong leaders from the Opposition who do not care about them.

“Our people would not have suffered this long if I had known about their plight earlier. However, they have suffered this long because whenever we go for elections, they choose the wrong leaders, from the Opposition, who do not care about them. The Opposition groups are not concerned about prescribing the cure for poverty and illegal evictions. All they do is divide our people along sectarian lines of tribe, religion, gender and age. Please, reject these ideologically bankrupt groups; and join hands with the NRM government to protect your legitimate interests like; acquisition of secure land tenure, education for your children, immunisation for the Bazukulu, clean and safe water, security and stability, good roads,” he lamented.

Museveni further encouraged the people of Kasokoso to take advantage of the wealth creation initiatives, such as PDM and Emyooga, to create wealth and jobs at the household level to enable economic empowerment of the household, which is key to building stable and prosperous families.

Reward Museveni with re-election

On the same event, Nabbanja rallied the voters in the area to wholeheartedly reward President Museveni, in the coming elections, based on what he has done for them.

Nabbanja also vowed to support the market vendors in Kasokoso as she was requested by the NRM flag-bearer for Kira Municipality  Member of Parliament seat, Daniel Kananura, who is seeking to unseat Ibrahim Semujju Nganda.

Kananura expressed joy following the President’s intervention, saying that many of the residents had been rendered homeless, with some residing in mosques and churches.

“Sadly, over 10,000 people were evicted and teargassed by the Uganda Police Force, despite Minister Mayanja’s intervention, claiming they had encroached on their land, which was donated to them by the National Housing, and when they ran to court to seeking an injunction, they were instead denied justice,” Kananura said.

On the other hand, NRM national chief mobiliser Rosemary Sseninde urged Kasokoso residents to vote for all the party flag-bearers for peace and security.

“Our country hosts over two million refugees, and we are ranked seventh among the fastest-growing economies due to the prevailing peace and security. This means President Museveni’s potential is self-explanatory. As I speak, he has also promised to more than double the PDM allocations for people living in urban areas, we should vote for NRM if we don’t want to miss out on this opportunity,” she said.

During the same event, some NUP supporters defected to NRM and were welcomed by the Prime Minister and Rosemary Sseninde, and other party leaders in the area.
