Panic gripped Kamdini township in Kamdini town council, Oyam district, on January 24, 2026, after a fierce fire destroyed several rental business premises, leaving property worth millions of shillings in ruins.

According to witnesses, the fire started in one of the kiosks before quickly spreading to adjacent structures that were mainly constructed from timber and iron sheets.

During the incident, property was burned beyond recognition. Items destroyed included mobile phones, foodstuffs, honey, paste, sim sim, soda and several bags of mangoes, among others, all of which were reduced to ashes.

Members of the public attempted to put out the fire but were overwhelmed by its intensity. The blaze spread rapidly due to the dry weather conditions and the flammable materials used in the construction of the kiosks.

Geoffrey Kasoji Odoul sustained injuries to his hand while trying to extinguish the fire. He called on the government, through the Office of the Prime Minister and the disaster preparedness ministry, to intervene and support the affected community.

Odoul further appealed for the installation of proper firefighting equipment to ensure the protection of civilians’ property. He noted that the community had failed to establish the cause of the fire, saying it reportedly started from behind the kiosks in broad daylight.

He also lamented delays by the fire brigade, noting that efforts to call for emergency response did not yield timely assistance to contain the blaze. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

The affected business community has appealed to well-wishers for support as they seek to rebuild their livelihoods.
