Police and members of the community were on Tuesday (February 3) still searching the River Nile following the drowning of a casual labourer at Amenye cell in the Western ward of Kamdini town council, Oyam district.
Denish Angulu, the LC1 chairperson of Amenye cell, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Monday, February 2, 2026.
Angulu identified the deceased as Gerald Malungu, a 19-year-old resident of Kiwenda parish, Busukuma subcounty in Wakiso district.
He explained that the victim was part of a team installing a solar water irrigation project valued at sh960 million.
According to Angulu, Malungu later went to the River Nile to bathe alongside a group thought to be minors who were swimming at the site.
The deceased reportedly jumped into the river, claiming that he knew how to swim, but was later overwhelmed by the water and drowned.
Angulu said the matter was reported to Kamdini Police Station under SD 37/2/2/2026 to enable investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The officer in charge of Kamdini Police Station, Alfred Odong, confirmed receiving the report and stated that the deceased was employed by Nature Green Co. Ltd.
