The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has expressed disappointment with party leaders who are secretly backing independent candidates in the 2026 General Election campaigns, saying it's denying their regions ministerial slots.

Rosemary Sseninde Nansubuga, the NRM chief mobiliser, made the remarks at a meeting with party leaders from the greater Mukono area, urging them to back party flag-bearers.

In a meeting organised for the NRM party presidential candidate’s rallies in the districts of Mukono, Kayunga, Buikwe and Buvuma held at Colline Hotel in Mukono town on December 29, 2025, Sseninde said independent candidates have little chance of getting Cabinet slots and accused some party leaders of lying to flag-bearers about their support.

She also criticised Opposition MPs for not being transparent about their emoluments and benefits. The preparatory meeting consisted of the NRM flag-bearers from the four districts, Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), party structure leaders and security agents.

Sam Eyenga, a member of the national NRM mobilisation team, emphasised the importance of targeting youth in the elections, saying they are the biggest beneficiaries of NRM's gains. Eyenga urged NRM activists to educate youth about the dangers of violence and engaging with Opposition groups.

The meeting also featured National Women Council Chairperson Hajat Faridah Kibowa, who praised the party's parish-level arrangement for mobilising votes. NRM chairperson for Mukono district Haji Haruna Ssemakula, thanked President Museveni for empowering lower party structures, expressing optimism about the party's performance in the elections. He said the campaigns were taken from the parish to the village level for a multiplier effect of resources.
