NRM CEC endorses Among, Tayebwa for Speaker and Deputy positions

Both Among and Tayebwa also drew support from CEC members due to the sacrifices that saw several independent-leaning NRM candidates who had contested against official party flag bearers step down.

KAMPALA - The National Resistance Movement (NRM) top decision-making organ, the Central Executive Committee (CEC), chaired by party chairman President Yoweri Museveni, has endorsed Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa for the same positions in the 12th Parliament.

Highly placed sources confirmed that the two were unanimously agreed upon by the CEC during a meeting held at State House on Tuesday (January 27).

The CEC decision will now be communicated to the NRM parliamentary caucus.
Sources noted that the duo was credited with strong mobilisation both in Parliament and on the ground, which helped the NRM consolidate its support ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Among, according to the source, scored highly among CEC members due to her role in the last elections, during which she traversed the country mobilising support for President Museveni and other party flag bearers.

Both Among and Tayebwa also drew support from CEC members due to the sacrifices that saw several independent-leaning NRM candidates who had contested against official party flag bearers step down.

By the time the CEC approved the two (Pictured) as its candidates, several other Members of Parliament had expressed interest in the positions, including Iddy Bassajabalaba.

The endorsement follows an established precedent under which both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker serve two consecutive five-year terms.

Among became Deputy Speaker in 2021, deputising the late Jacob Oulanyah, before being appointed Speaker following Oulanyah’s death.

Tayebwa, on the other hand, replaced Among as Deputy Speaker. The two have worked closely together and, during their tenure, are credited with passing the highest number of Bills, many of which have since been assented to into law.
