Police at Ngora Central Police Station are holding a 50-year-old man, Stephen Osiara of Okorom village, Tididiek parish, Ngora sub-county, on allegations of killing his wife, Veronica Amuge, following a dispute over cooked meat.
Dennis Pahani, the district police commander of Ngora Central Police Station, said the violence erupted after Osiara served all the cooked meat from a saucepan without leaving any for their son. Osiara reportedly kicked and beat his wife until she collapsed.
Neighbours rushed Amuge to Ngora Freda Carr Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Michael Odong L’Asio, the LC5 chairperson of Ngora district and head of the district security committee, condemned the act, noting that domestic violence often stems from over-drinking and greed.
According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2024, domestic violence remained one of the most commonly reported offences nationwide, with 14,073 cases recorded compared to 14,681 the year before, representing a slight decrease but still a significant number of incidents linked to family disputes and abuse.
