President Yoweri Museveni, who was recently re-elected for another five-year term as head of state, has filed his response to a petition challenging his victory. The President has, as a result, asked the Supreme Court to dismiss the case with costs on the grounds that it is incurably defective.

The presidential election was held on January 15, 2026, and according to the Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson, Simon Byabakama, Museveni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party was the winner with 7,946,772 votes (71.65%).

The eight-man race, according to official results released by EC, saw National Unity Platform’s Robert Kyagulanyi come second with 2,741,238 votes (24.72%).

Museveni filed the answer to Robert Kasibante’s petition at the Supreme Court registry in Kampala on January 26, 2026, through his lawyers of K&K Advocates.

Museveni is battling the petition jointly with the Electoral Commission (EC) and Attorney General, whose respective answers to the petition had not yet been received by press time.
