Museveni condoles Kampala–Gulu highway crash victims, offers sh5m to bereaved families

Museveni further urged "all road users to exercise utmost caution to prevent such tragedies. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace."

KAMPALA - President Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, extended his condolences to the victims of the Kampala–Gulu highway crash that claimed 46 lives.

In a message shared on X, Museveni said, "I have learnt with sadness about the tragic accident that occurred this morning along the Kampala–Gulu highway, claiming many lives. I extend my condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a quick recovery. I have directed the State House Comptroller to give Sh5m to each bereaved family and Sh1m to the injured."

Museveni further urged "all road users to exercise utmost caution to prevent such tragedies. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace."

Police on Wednesday morning clarified that the death toll from the Kiryandongo accident had been revised to 46.

"Some victims who were previously considered dead were later found to be unconscious," Police said.

The accident involved four motor vehicles: UBF 614X, an Isuzu bus (Nile Star Coaches); CGO 5132AB 07, a Toyota Surf; UBK 647C, a Tata lorry; and UAM 045V, an Isuzu bus (Planet Company).

According to Police, initial investigations revealed that the driver of the Isuzu bus, registration number UBF 614X, travelling from Kampala towards Gulu, attempted to overtake the Tata lorry (UBK 647C) at Kitaleba.

At the same time, the Isuzu bus (UAM 045V), travelling from the opposite direction, was also attempting to overtake the Toyota Surf (CGO 5132AB 07). During these manoeuvres, both buses met head-on.

One of the drivers swerved in an attempt to avoid a collision, but this resulted in a head-on and side collision, triggering a chain reaction that caused other vehicles to lose control and overturn several times.

As a result, 63 people lost their lives, all of whom were occupants of the involved vehicles, while several others sustained injuries.
