KABALE - Kabale University has honoured Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba for his “splendid achievements and prestigious” appointment as deputy governor of the Bank of Uganda (BOU) in February this year.
Nuwagaba received the award of honour on June 27, 2025, from John Okumu, a member of the university council, at a function held at the White Horse Inn Hotel in Kabale District.
“With great joy, Kabale University honours Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba for his splendid achievements and his prestigious appointment of Deputy Governor of Bank of Uganda,” the citation read, describing him as a champion and advocate for economic development.
It also hailed him as a selfless servant who has dedicated his life to improving human livelihoods.
“Professor Nuwagaba’s services span various social, economic and education sectors. Currently a member of Kabale University Council, and previously a member of the University Council of Uganda Christian University, Professor Nuwagaba has been dedicated to uplifting the delivery of services in higher institutions of education and other related organisations,” it noted.
The university further recognised that the BOU deputy governor has served on the Audit Committee of the Ministry of Finance and has facilitated institutional strengthening, strategic planning, change management and business planning for various public sectors across Africa.
These countries include Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, and Uganda, among others.
“Prof. Nuwagaba has successfully undertaken high-profile consultancy assignments for African governments, multilateral and bilateral agencies. He was also a consultant for the World Bank Client Feedback Survey and for the Bank of Uganda on the analysis of currency policy (2006),” the citation stated.
It added that he has developed strategic plans for various sectors and agencies in Uganda.
“He has facilitated strategic thinking for international agencies, including the World Bank, United Nations, USAID, among others. Prof. Nuwagaba has been a consultant for the private sector, including Mobile Telecommunication Network and Kampala City Traders Association,” the university noted.
Nuwagaba was also commended for leading numerous high-profile national and regional assignments, including the development of the East African Community Strategic Plan 2016–2021 and the mid–term review of Uganda’s National Development Plan I (2010/11–2014/15).
The university also recognised his contribution to the Financial Inclusion Project (FINSCOPE 2013), which focused on analysing the determinants of financial service utilisation, as well as the development of strategic reviews of policies, sectoral plans, monitoring and evaluation frameworks, and results matrices for governments—particularly in Uganda through the Office of the Prime Minister.
“With all these and more, the professional and personal career he has worked so hard to build, demonstrated by outstanding achievements, Professor Nuwagaba could not hide any longer from the eyes of the Visionary Leader of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. the President, for the appointment to the prestigious Office of Deputy Governor of Bank of Uganda,” the university concluded.
