Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II (King of Buganda) has returned home after a trip to Europe for medical checkup.

The Kingdom Deputy Prime Minister Prof Twaha Kaawaase on Friday, July 4, received Kabaka Mutebi at Entebbe International Airport.

His return was publicised in an X (formerly Twitter) post on the Buganda Kingdom handle, with him in a photo with Kaawaase. The post had no mention of the country he travelled to nor his condition.

On June 5th, Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikkiro of Buganda (prime minister), in a brief statement, said that the Kabaka’s medical team had recommended regular checkups.

“He (Kabaka) left the country for a routine health check. The medical experts will examine his progress and he will be back shortly. I would like to assure the People in Buganda and Ugandans that the Kabaka’s health is in the best hands with the best medical teams here and abroad,” said Mayiga.

He also assured the country that his condition was not worrying.

Whereas he did not reveal Kabaka's destination, while in Europe, Mayiga released photographs of himself and Prince Crispin Jjunju Kiweewa seeing Kabaka off at Entebbe International Airport.

Last April when Kabaka was reported ill at some undisclosed location outside Uganda, Mengo establishment was mum about his travels and condition. The silence attracted backlash from sections demanding an explanation about his whereabouts.

The demands, particularly on social media, lasted for a period of three months until close sources later revealed that he was in Namibia receiving specialised medical attention at Okonguari Psychotherapeutic Centre as recommended by his medical team in Germany.

Kabaka Mutebi's return to Uganda on July 22, 2024, was a public spectacle with a big entourage of his family receiving him at Entebbe Airport.

They included his wife Nabagereka Sylvia Nagginda, the queen of Buganda, his children and his siblings. The royal family were accompanied by Katikiro Mayiga and some Buganda ministers.

Prince Crispin Jjunju Kiweewa and Princess Victoria Nkinzi, in a public statement,t expressed gratitude to God for their father’s recovery and thanked Kabaka’s medical teams in Namibia, Germany and Switzerland.

The royal family condemned what they termed as 'speculation' about the Kabaka’s health describing it as a violation of human tradition.

The siblings stated that their father remained under medical care and required continued treatment and rest to achieve full recovery.

They also called for patience and respect for privacy during the time of recuperation.
