LIRA - Tragedy struck on Thursday evening when a couple riding on a motorcycle crushed to death after a head-on collision with a fuel tanker along the Lira–Kamdini highway.
The incident occurred at about 8:30 pm on September 11, 2025, at Juba Road, near Ober junction in Lira City West Division.
North Kyoga Police spokesperson, Patrick Jimmy Okema, reported the collision with the tanker, registration number KCP 773P/ZF 8452, heading towards Lira Cit,y occurred when the motorcyclist attempted to dodge a pedestrian who had dashed to cross the road.
In the process, the rider lost control, veered into the lane of oncoming traffic, and rammed into the tanker.
The victims, identified as Sam Anyeko and his wife Gladys, died instantly. Anyeko had reportedly picked up his wife from Charish Medical Centre, where she worked as a nurse.
Police officers from Central and City West Divisions visited the scene, removed the bodies and towed vehicles to Lira City West Police parking yard pending inspection. The tanker driver who fled after the incident remains at large.
On the same day, bicycle cyclist, Sam Apunyu, 47, a mason from Bar Acaci Cell in Adekokwok Ward, died instantly after he was run over by a speeding motorcycle along Lira – Aloi Road near Nexus Secondary School.
The unknown motorcycle and bicycle involved in the crash are yet to be recovered.
Police said inquiries into both incidents are ongoing.
