The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has appointed Brigadier Paul Muwonge as the new commander of the UPDF Mountain Infantry Division.
Muwonge replaces Maj. Gen. James Birungi, who has been sent to Bujumbura, Burundi, as Uganda’s Military Attaché and Defence Advisor.
The change comes two months after Birungi was appointed to head the base in Fort Portal-based division, where Brig Muwonge was.
A release from the CDF's office on Wednesday also revealed that Brig Muwonge also takes over command of Operation Shujaa, the joint UPDF-FARDC mission targeting ADF rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Over the weekend, Muwonge was part of the CDF's entourage on a working visit DR Congo.
The team, which also included the Commander of Land Forces Lt. Gen Kayanja Muhanga, among several engagements, held talks with DR Congo's President Felix Tshisekedi.
In a public statement, Col Chris Magezi, the military assistant to the CDF revealed that Birungi replaced Brig. Gen Simon Ochan, who completed his tour of duty, will return to the Joint UPDF Services Headquarters for reassignment.
Major General Birungi was, until April this year, the UPDF Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security (CDIS), a command which he later handed over to Maj Gen Richard Otto.
