The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Mrs Janet Museveni, has said Uganda’s new stadium in Hoima city will bring immediate benefit to the Bunyoro oil-rich sub-region.

She made the remarks during the inauguration of the Hoima City Stadium by President Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.

“Although this is a national asset, it is also an asset that will bring immediate benefit to the Bunyoro community because you host it right here,” Mrs Museveni told the people of Bunyoro.

She noted that the same level of commitment that the Ugandan government has shown in bringing the new stadium to reality is the same resolve they have as a ministry to see that the public university for Bunyoro becomes a reality.

“The vision you have for infrastructure development for the public university in Bunyoro region is something that the NRM (National Resistance Movement) Government is determined to see achieved,” she said.

The First Lady reminded the people of Bunyoro that “you must please be good stewards of these national assets that are in your midst, from the oil wells, now this national multisport complex and the upcoming public university”.

The new 20,000-seat stadium was built as part of the preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

It is one of the ten facilities Uganda is putting in place as it prepares to host AFCON alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

The First Lady recently honoured the late Dr James Rujumba on behalf of the Government for donating ten acres of land and also thanked the Federation of Uganda Football Associations for the additional 10 acres.

“With the government’s purchase of 22 acres, Hoima City Stadium now rests on a solid foundation of 42 acres,” she said on December 20, 2025, via X.

The new stadium was constructed by the Turkish firm, M/S Summa, in just over 12 months, according to government officials.
