Brigadier General Johnson Namanya has Tuesday (March 31), been released from military detention.
Acting Director Defence Public Information, Col. Chris Magezi, revealed that Brig. Gen. Namanya was released after an amicable and friendly meeting with the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in which he was cleared of all allegations levelled against him.
“The CDF, General Kainerugaba, has today (Tuesday) released Brig. Gen. Namanya from detention after an amicable and friendly meeting in which the latter was cleared of all allegations levelled against him. Brig Gen Namanya will resume his military duties accordingly,” Col. Magezi said.
Col. Magezi, however, did not comment on the fate of Major General Don William Nabasa, the Joint Staff Policy and Strategy in the UPDF, who was arrested on Thursday last week alongside Brig. Gen. Namanya.
Major General Nabasa was appointed to the position on January 3, 2025, having previously served as the commander of the 3rd Infantry Division in Moroto, where he commanded special forces and conducted anti-terrorism operations against cattle rustlers and insurgents in Karamoja.
He also served as the Commander of the UPDF Military Police, appointed in October 2021, and previously commanded the Special Forces Command in 2017. Maj. Gen. Nabasa also led the Ugandan contingent in Somalia under the African Mission in Somalia.
Maj. Gen. Nabasa and Brigadier General Namanya were detained after being summoned and interrogated by the Deputy CDF, Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding, for several hours before being transferred to the Kasenyi military detention facility.
