Soroti Catholic Bishop Joseph Eciru Oliach has confirmed 686 Christians at St Stephen Catholic Church in Katakwi town council, Katakwi district.

While delivering his homily, Eciru urged Christians to remain firm in the teachings of the Church and to always trust in Jesus Christ. He cautioned believers against abandoning their faith, emphasising that true Christian life requires commitment, obedience and perseverance.

The confirmation ceremony was held on Boxing Day, which holds special significance for Christians worldwide as the Feast of Saint Stephen. Saint Stephen is honoured as the first Christian martyr.

Saint Stephen was a deacon in the early Church in Jerusalem, well known for his strong faith, good works and service to the poor and widows. His powerful preaching and miracles led to his arrest and trial, where he was falsely accused of blasphemy.

He was later stoned to death for his belief in Jesus Christ.

"Be Christians with forgiving hearts to those who accuse you in any form. Do not retaliate because Jesus teaches us to be forgiving people," Bishop Eciru said, also urging Christians to emulate St Stephen by standing for truth and remaining faithful to Christ, even in times of difficulty.

"He died telling the truth about the goodness of Jesus and so as believers we should also die in him. Do not be tempted to go to the witch doctors but remain trusting in the Lord under all circumstances," the prelate said.

The Bishop also appealed to men to formally wed their wives, saying marriage is a sign of love, responsibility, and respect for the teachings of Jesus Christ.

"It's not proper for you to stay with a woman without wedding her," Eciru said.

The prayers attracted thousands of Christians from across Katakwi, which is the second-largest district in the Teso sub-region after Serere District.
