Veteran journalist and broadcaster Alan Kasujja has been appointed the new Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre (UMC), marking a significant shift in leadership at the government’s key communications agency.

The appointment was directed by President Yoweri Museveni through a letter dated December 27, 2025, addressed to the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

In the letter, the President instructed the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, to initiate the administrative process to formalise Kasujja’s appointment.

“I was not aware of the ongoing manoeuvres. However, some weeks ago, we discussed the idea of Allan Kasujja with you. I have already directed Dr Chris Baryomunsi to appoint Allan Kasujja as Executive Director of the Media Centre. We can then look at the others,” Museveni wrote in a letter dated December 27, 2025.

“By copy of this letter, I direct Dr Chris Baryomunsi to initiate the procedures for appointing Allan Kasujja and, additionally, assessing others who could serve as deputy,” the president added.

Kasujja replaces Ofwono Opondo, who stepped down from the position in April 2025 to pursue elective politics. Opondo was later elected unopposed as the Member of Parliament representing Older Persons for Eastern Uganda.

Kasujja brings decades of experience in both local and international journalism. He is best known for his long tenure at the BBC World Service, where he served as a lead presenter on Newsday and later hosted the widely followed Africa Daily podcast. His work at the BBC earned him recognition for in-depth interviews and nuanced coverage of African and global affairs.

Before joining the BBC, Kasujja worked across Uganda’s media landscape, including stints at Capital FM, Sanyu FM, and television broadcasting in the 1990s and early 2000s, establishing himself as one of the country’s most authoritative broadcast voices.

The Uganda Media Centre plays a central role in coordinating government communication, shaping official messaging, and engaging with both local and international media.
