Christian leaders across multiple churches in Tororo district used Easter Sunday sermons to deliver a call for renewal, urging believers to embrace new life in Christ while addressing pressing social concerns.

Uganda Martyrs Cathedral Nyangole was filled with joy and songs of praise as Christians gathered to celebrate Easter, commemorating Christ's resurrection from the dead.

In his homily, Fr. William Ojulo, Rector of Uganda Martyrs Cathedral Nyangole and head of liturgy in the Archdiocese of Tororo, called upon the faithful to put their past behind them and become new people.

"My brothers and sisters, today is a day of unimaginable joy! We gather not just to remember a story, but to experience a transformation. The tomb is empty! The Lord has risen! And with Him, He offers us a chance – a glorious, liberating chance – to be made new," Fr Ojulo stated.

He urged the faithful to be honest with themselves and accept the changes that come their way, letting go of past mistakes, regrets, and disappointments.

"The words of the tomb, echoing through time, speak to our present: “He is not here; he has risen!” Some of us, sadly, are still clinging to the chains of the past. We revisit old hurts, rehash old failures, and let the stone of our past life remain firmly in place, blocking our path to freedom," he said.

Bishop appeals against land grabbing

Meanwhile, at St Peter's Cathedral, Bishop Samuel Bogere Egesa of Bukedi Diocese cautioned against land grabbing, emphasising that it contradicts Christ's teachings.

"Some individuals have resorted to grabbing land, including church property. This is unacceptable. Let Christ's resurrection touch their hearts, prompting them to support the church's development and become agents of peace," he appealed.

Easter as a time of reflection

For Christians, Easter is a time for deep spiritual renewal and reflection. It is an opportunity to reaffirm faith in the risen Christ and to embrace the promise of new life.

The season encourages believers to practice acts of charity, forgiveness, and service, striving to live out the values of the Gospel. It serves as a constant reminder that with Christ's resurrection comes the assurance of hope, redemption, and the ultimate promise of eternal life in the presence of God.
