Saturday (August 9) business at Rubaga Cathedral in Uganda's capital, Kampala, was not as usual.
There was an atmosphere of joy, celebration and jubilation as the gigantic church of the White Fathers held a massive ordination function during which 24 deacons were elevated to priesthood and seven major seminarians raised to the diaconate.

The glorious function was presided over by the Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, Paul Ssemogerere. Ecclesial dignitaries, including the Apostolic Nuncio Dr Augustine Kasujja, the Kampala Metropolitan Vicar-General Msgr. Rogers Kabuye Mukasa and a number of local superiors of religious institutes also graced the mass that was concelebrated by over 300 priests.
Delivering his homily during Mass, Ssemogerere urged the newly-ordained priests and deacons to serve the Church with utmost dedication, looking at Jesus, the Divine Master, as their model.

He cautioned them against the vice of materialism, which he said was not in line with the priestly ministry.
"The real wealth of a priest is not measured by the money or material things he has amassed, but by the lives he has transformed and the souls he has won for Christ. So, desist from the temptation of looking at your priesthood as a source of money and wealth," said the archbishop.
The Prelate of Lubaga also asked the new priests and deacons to be obedient to the established Ecclesial authority.

"Always remain in communion with your Bishop. Never act independently of him. Be obedient to him and work harmoniously with your brother priests," said Ssemogerere.
