At least 17 people on Tuesday evening sustained serious injuries in a motor crash during a campaign trail, two days before the National Resistance Movement (NRM) structure elections at sub-county, municipality and Division elections.

The victims, all supporters of Pastor Dauson Kyakuwa (pic) of the Power of Healing and Prayer House Ministry, Kiyunga in Mukono district and were on a campaign trail where their candidate was making last-minute campaigns. Pastor Kyakuwa is one of the candidates vying for the NRM flag for Seeta-Namuganga sub-county.

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, confirmed that the police at Naggalama Police Division were Wednesday investigating what he termed as a serious accident that occurred at around 5:30pm on August 12, at Lusera village along the Kasawo-Ntonto road.

The incident involved a white Fuso truck, carrying a large number of supporters whose exact number was yet to be verified. The driver of the truck vanished and was still on the run, according to Onyango.

He said three victims sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Kayunga Referral Hospital, where they were still receiving treatment. Onyango identified some of the victims on the truck as: Jenatia Ssebufu, 20, Abudhala Mugoya, Akim Odoi, 6, Faziah Nakintu, 23, Juliet Bilabwa, 24, Sadati Mujona, 15, Irene Namaganda, 25, Justine Nantale, 39, Jalia Nakanjako, 44, Specioza Nagawa, 40, Nakagwa Kisakye, 25, Yusuf Lubowa, 20, John Kanamwanje, 66, and Alex H, 43. The majority of the supporters were from the two villages of Kasawo, Kabimbiri and Kisawe.

“The vehicle was allegedly coming from a campaign rally in Kasawo sub-county with an unknown number of passengers on board.

Upon reaching a swamp in Lusera Village, the driver lost control of the vehicle. Several passengers fell off, and the vehicle fell into the swamp, with some getting stuck in the mud.

Inquiries are ongoing to ascertain the possible cause of the accident,” Onyango explained.

When contacted, Pastor Kyakuwa, who was in a meeting in preparation for the Thursday polls, described the incident as unfortunate. “Some of my supporters are still in the hospital receiving treatment.
