Song Review: Morocco, by Joshua Baraka FT Shenseea & Axon
I genuinely didn’t think we would get a remix this soon, but if the production team behind Joshua Baraka followed industry trends, he wouldn’t be who he is now, would he?
Besides, this is the remix we didn’t know we needed.
Shenseea, whose government name is Chinsea Linda Lee, is a Jamaican singer. She is best known for her guest appearance alongside Roddy Ricch on Kanye West's 2021 song Pure Souls, which entered the Billboard Hot 100.
So Joshua Baraka didn’t just get down a remix, he pulled some pedigree onboard. She has 8 million followers on Instagram - I am guessing her looks do not hurt. Billboard has referred to her as ‘the fastest rising dancehall artiste’ so this was something of a coup for Joshua.
She’s got some pretty lofty goals, Shenseea – her target is a Grammy. She brings more than Jamaican sass to Morocco – her cameo is brilliant.
There is nothing contrived about her lines – she joins the track seamlessly, adopting the song’s fun and playful sassiness with her own brand of sass. She is perfect counterfoil to Joshua Baraka, lacing her lines with his. I know she just joined the project and all but it almost sounds like this darned song was written with her in mind.
Credit is due to the production team. Axon, of course, is the producer that collaborates closest with Baraka on most of his hit tracks and produced both the original and this remix. He has also helped develop that sonic signature that Baraka is renowned for, that ‘Baraka sound’.
Hats off – this is seamless stuff.
