The Toto Christmas Festival is not only about entertainment; it is also a platform for promoting young talent. One such rising star is Marcellinah Babirye, popularly known as D.J. Babi Love.
She is in Primary Six at Aunt Rachael Primary School in Masaka and has come to the Kampala Parents’ School sports ground to showcase her skills. Don’t miss her when you come around. Before her performance, MAUREEN NAKATUDDE caught up with her, and here is what she had to say.
What do you do?
I am a DJ. I play music at functions and events.
When did you start being a DJ?
I started with my twin sister, Nakato, when we were in Primary One, but along the way she lost interest, and I kept going.
Why?
I like music and entertaining others.
Who inspired you to be a DJ?
My mother inspired me, and I also look up to Ssuuna Ben of Bukedde TV. I like the way he organises and speaks over his music.
How do you practise being a DJ?
I practise at home and also play at children’s functions in Masaka town and at our school.
So, here at the Toto Christmas Festival, what are you going to do for us?
I am going to play and mix music for children.
Since you started being a DJ, have you gained anything from it?
Yes, I have. From the money I earn, my parents top up and pay my school fees. I also buy treats like sweets, ice cream and a few clothes.
In the future, what do you hope to become?
I want to become a professional DJ.
How did you learn about the Toto Christmas Festival?
I learnt about it from Bukedde 1’s Embutu Y’ebutikizi event, where I also performed. People kept telling my mum to let me participate in the festival because it would give me more exposure.
What advice do you give to children like you?
I advise them to take part in children’s festivals because they help promote talent.
Sponsored by Ruparelia Group, SUMZ, NIRA, Toyota, Pepsi, and Indomie, the Toto Christmas Festival is taking place at the Kampala Parents School in Naguru, and entry for each child is sh10,000.
