'Only 15 Soroti govt-aided schools have land titles'

Esatu explained that the absence of clear land demarcations in many government schools has made it difficult to process land titles, a situation that has encouraged encroachment on school property.

SOROTI - At least 54 government-aided schools in Soroti district are operating without land titles, raising concerns over increasing cases of land encroachment.

According to Soroti principal assistant secretary Moses Esatu, only 15 schools in the district currently possess land titles, leaving the majority vulnerable to disputes with neighbouring communities.

Esatu explained that the absence of clear land demarcations in many government schools has made it difficult to process land titles, a situation that has encouraged encroachment on school property.

Meanwhile, Vincent Epecu, chairperson of the school management committee of Akaikai Primary School, says the lack of land titles is compounded by the absence of fencing in many schools.

He noted that unfenced school premises make it easy for learners to leave unnoticed, affecting discipline and safety.

Some of the affected schools include Aminit, Awoja, Angopet, Asuret, Katine Tiriri, Kamuda, Merok, Lalle, Katine, Agora, Gweri, Awoja Bridge, Abelet, Dakabela, Arapai, Arabaka, Tukum, Obuja, Amotot, Tubur, Omodoi, Adacar Asuret, Abeko, Acetgwen and Palaet primary schools, among others.
