Leaders, friends and the medical fraternity in Teso have eulogised Dr Godfrey Egwau, a retired consultant gynaecologist and politician who died on November 23, 2025, at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala.

At St Peter's Cathedral in Soroti, where Bishop Kosea Odongo was commissioning 143 lay readers on Sunday, a moment of silence was observed in his honour.

Dr Egwau is remembered for his role in the construction of the cathedral, which is now nearing completion.

Fisheries state minister Hellen Adoa described Egwau as a great doctor who served Teso and Uganda by helping mothers.

According to the family, Dr Egwau had been receiving treatment at the Cancer Institute until his death on Sunday.

Serere LC5 chairman Stephen Ochola expressed shock, saying Teso would miss the vital services Dr Egwau had been providing.

Jonathan Maraka, the former editor of Etop newspaper and now the spokesman for the Anglican Diocese of Kumi, described Dr Egwau as a close friend of 43 years.

He noted that it was unfortunate that he died before witnessing the completion of St Peter's Cathedral in Soroti, a project to which he contributed significantly.

Peter Ojur, the brother of the deceased, revealed that Egwau died of multiple organ failure after spending four days at the Cancer Institute, where he had been rushed for treatment.

Egwau's body arrived in Soroti on Monday and was taken to the morgue at Bethesda Hospital until Friday (November 23), when a church service will be held at St Peter's Cathedral in Soroti. The body will then be taken to his home in Arapai ahead of burial on Sunday.

After retiring from Soroti Referral Hospital, Egwau joined politics and served as the UPC party vice-chairperson for north and north-east Uganda before defecting to the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party in 2015.

He made two attempts to contest for Soroti County and Dakabela County MP in Soroti district but was not successful.

At the time of his passing, Egwau was involved in mediation proceedings in a case in which he had been charged over the death of a patient at his Soroti clinic in January this year.
