A city businessman has been charged with fraudulent evasion of taxes amounting to shillings 17 million.

Gerald Bulime, 40, a resident of Mwanga, Munyonyo in Kampala city, was on July 18, 2025, charged with fraudulent tax evasion of uncustomed goods, contrary to Section 200(d)(iii) of the East African Customs Management Act, 2004.

It is alleged that between January and March 2025, in Kampala City, Bulime and others, still at large, fraudulently evaded payment of customs duty by affixing the number plate UBE 505G, registered to a Volvo S40 (CBA-MB5244), chassis number YVIM83859A2506012, onto an uncustomed motor vehicle, a Volvo X60.

The prosecution, led by Allan Nkoyoyo, alleges that the act was intended to disguise the vehicle's identity and avoid paying the necessary customs duties.

It is further alleged that between February and March 2022, Bulime and others, still at large, acquired an uncustomed Volvo X60, knowing that the vehicle had not undergone the required customs clearance.

Bulime denied the charges and was remanded to Luzira Prison until August 4, 2025, pending his bail application.

Nkoyoyo informed the court that investigations are still ongoing and requested additional time to update the court on the progress of the inquiries.

"Your Worship, inquiries into the case are still incomplete. I request an adjournment to allow the police to continue with their investigations," Nkoyoyo said.
